Beautiful Mindanao

facebook google twitter tumblr instagram linkedin
Lolong housed in Bunawan Eco-Park

Lolong would be the world's largest saltwater crocodile in the world, according to National Geographic representatives led by Dr. Adam Briton.

Briton confirmed that Lolong has a measurement of 21feet and one-inch while the Guinness record holder named Cassius Clay from Australia was 18ft. And it is for sure will it will replace Cassius, but the process would take six months before the Guinness World officially recognizes Lolong as the largest saltwater crocodile in the world.

But despite this, Lolong's popularity dramatically increases from the time it was captured. He became the top story of different media sources, including search engines like Google. It also earned almost half-a-million  from donations, entrance and parking fees at the Bunawan Eco-Park stated by the Bunawan town mayor Edwin Elorde. Experts hoped Lolong will improve the tourism to Agusan Marsh, and to Mindanao once it became the  largest saltwater crocs in the world.

Another Entry for Davao Food Appreciation Tour 2011

Perhaps the DFAT 2011 participants (including myself) are thrill-seeking diners who never get tired of crispy pig's belly and ribs.

Ranchero is a renowned baby back ribs specialty in Davao and Gensan City, with a cowboy theme. And in order for you to feel like you are in a ranch house, waiters and waitress are in cowboy attires with cowboy hats. Supah cool, right? :D

Speaking of baby back ribs, they are from the top of the rib cage between the spine and the spare ribs. Baby back ribs, as you would think, are taken from hogs, not from baby pigs and thus the meatiest part. Alongside, there is a combo of vegetables plus a savory dipping barbecue sauce gives every piece an extra of juiciness. But some diners prefer to eat baby back ribs itself.

For an even appetizing meal, Ranchero Garlic Fried Chicken added to the table. The slices come with thick butter over a bed of garlic chunks, makes the most magical sweetness and hot combination.

Not into pork or chicken? Lumpiang Hubad is just as much fun to eat. You will put filling with crushed peanuts and sauce into a fresh lettuce leaf. Lumpiang Hubad is a simplified version that uses lettuce leaves instead of lumpia wrapper.

Besides Ranchero Baby Back Ribs and garlic chicken, listed on the menus are crispy pata, Creamy Dory Sinigang sa Miso, Bagoong Rice, and a bunch of local Filipino desserts. Just try one and your experience turns into magical gastronomic experience.

Ranchero is located at 3rd floor Roof garden, Abreeza Ayala Mall and at Metro Lifestyle Complex, Jacinto corner F. Torres Avenue. For reservations, you may call them at (082) 222-0793 or @pablos.davao@yahoo.com.

Another Entry for Davao Food Appreciation Tour 2011

When I was in Davao City (for almost 3 years), I thought nothing can beat Ctres as my favorite. But the day I swore I won't eat beef anymore for the sake of all cows on earth, Tong Yang - a Korean restaurant became a top choice. I must have fixed with that until I joined the Davao Food Appreciation Tour 2011. So you're wondering what's my favorite now?

A lesson learned: Don't Stick with Favorites, instead be open-mouthed and be ready to explore. Delicious food can be found anywhere. And my new find? Tantaran... Lachi's San Rival atbp. It is just a small restaurant/shop along Ruby Street, Marfori Heights, but the twin owners Mike and Melvin Aviles pride themselves on preparing dishes and baking fresh cakes.

Upon entering, the smells were so right. Inside you can see tables and chairs occupying most space of the restaurant, the menus and a periodic table of the desserts were posted on the wall, and of course the display of a variety of snacks and cakes.

The rest of the DFAT participants seated on the long table when a nice lady gave us trays and told us to wait a few minutes and our food will be served. After a few minutes, a miracle comes (biglang umulan ng pagkain).

They served Unforgettable Pork Ribs, when you take a bite, it's so tender, after a few chew, you can utter "unforgettable nga".

Beef Tapa & Oriental Friend Chicken

Chili con Carne & Bangus Belly

Laing & Adobong Bangus Belly

Pork Marinara & Oriental Pork Surprise

But the happiest miracle of all - plenty of desserts, especially if you have a sweet tooth. The desserts are a mixture of cheesecake and their special San Rivals.

Lachi's offers to their customers different San's Rival including the classic, coffee, and durian I think :) It is the Sans Rival that Lachi's is known for.

Aside from Sans Rival, Lachi's also bakes various cakes and tortes.

Btw, you can order cakes at Lachi's Sans Rival ATBP for any special occasions such as birthday, wedding, or Sans Rival to make friends get together more memorable and sweet :D

My first entry for Davao Food Appreciation Tour 2011

"Heavy meals for small tummies"
Trellis n Vines offers a huge selection of food, from appetizers up to the desserts and fruit shakes. What do you want to eat? Chicken or some fatty pork? Great if you already know what you want. If not, perhaps you might be missing the specials. Here's my recommendation, try their Baby back ribs, Chicken Biryani, Sinuglaw, Pan-fried Bangus with Tomato Sauce and Adobong Kangkong, Crispy noodles and Banana Roll.

Every meal starts with a bowl of soup. Ours is Corn & Crab soup with some slices of bright-orange crab, corn kernels and seasoned with cream and salt. This cozy little restaurant offers Sinuglaw - a grilled pork belly. It was decorated heavily with herbs and vegetables. A good appetizer, indeed. Craving for Chicken? Order Chicken Biryani seasoned with curry and a cracker on top. Large sliced chicken is so tender, plus the combination of Indian spices is hot enough once you bite into them.

But my attention got distracted when a baby back ribs is served on the skinny long table. Crowned with BBQ sauce and the meat is to tender. It is one of the best servings here. But even the usual Pan-Fried Bangus with Tomato and Adobong Kangkon is worth contemplating. A plate of Pan-Fried Bangus has come with full of surprising tomato sauce flavor and wonderful adobong kangkong on it.

What I enjoyed the most is the Crispy Noodles. The serving of this creative dish is good for 3 - 4 persons. The crispy noodles are scribbled with vegetables and a sauce similar to chopsuey that covers the taste of the noodles. It is best to devour this crispy canton right after it's served so you will enjoy the crispiness of the noodles.

Of course, a meal is not complete without the refreshing fruit shakes or Banana Rolls with a very soft texture and sweetness of honey and peanut butter that made the combination right. Or, if you are interested in fruit shakes, ask the staff, and they will surely suggest something from their long list.

Lastly, service is a big plus. Not to mention it has a good ambiance - for it is not crowded and noisy. And for some tips to fully enjoy your dining at Trellis n Vines, it is best to come early or avoid coming with hungry tummies. It is not a fast food chain, so it will take time before your orders will be served. Also, bring your family or friends with you. Most of their servings cater for 3 - 4 persons. You can hardly consume all the baby back ribs if you're alone.

In the midst of the lush beauty of Mindanao, lies a hidden gem that captivates the senses and leaves a lasting impression on all who have the privilege to visit. A place that feels like a dream, where swimming with the fishes becomes an ethereal experience, and where the scent of pineapples fills the air like a sweet, tantalizing melody.

As a participant of the Soccsksargen Experience tour, we were treated to a day of wonder and awe as we journeyed to the DOLEFIL Clubhouse in Kalsangi. A place that truly lives up to its name, as it is home to the largest pineapple plantation in the entire country, sprawling across a staggering 12,000 hectares. The sight of this vast sea of pineapples is enough to make anyone feel like they've stepped into a paradise of golden fruits.

Kalsangi Clubhouse in Dole Philippines Polomolok

As we arrived at the Kalsangi Clubhouse, nestled amidst a family of pine trees that reminded us of the charming Baguio City, we were struck by the sheer grandeur and exclusivity of the place. This private haven is reserved for DOLEFIL employees and their esteemed guests, making us feel incredibly fortunate to have been granted access on this day.

Beyond the picturesque landscapes, what stole our hearts were the delectable snacks that awaited us inside. Platters of freshly sliced pineapples, glistening with succulent juices, beckoned us to indulge in their sweet and tangy flavors. Alongside this tropical delight, we savored palabok and clubhouse sandwiches, a culinary fusion that left our taste buds in a state of sheer delight.

As we relished the scrumptious treats, Gwynee Ebol of Dole Philippines graced us with her insights into the world of DoleFil. We discovered their dedication to supporting local farmers in planting pineapples, uplifting communities through tree-planting initiatives, and donating much-needed classroom chairs. Their heartwarming efforts even earned them an esteemed award, recognizing their commitment to social responsibility.

If you ever desire to embark on a journey to the Kalsangi Clubhouse, you must seek out a DoleFil regular employee to secure a coveted get pass, for this oasis is not open to just anyone. But once you have the pass in your hands, you can rest assured that the experience will be nothing short of extraordinary.

Kalsangi Clubhouse is a haven where the beauty of nature intertwines seamlessly with the warmth of Filipino hospitality. It is a place where the scent of pineapples lingers in the air, and where you'll find yourself immersed in the wonders of Mindanao's hidden treasures. So, embark on this journey of a lifetime and savor every moment of your visit to this pineapple paradise in the heart of Beautiful Mindanao.
